Ornella is a romantic bohemian bow top, perfect for summer.
Its distinctive charm comes from its sweetheart neckline, adorned with a bow. The wide straps and neckline band beautifully frame the décolletage, while the gathered frill gently flares out to the high hips, adding graceful volume. Il est possible d’ajouter un galon festonné aux bretelles (optionnel), comme ici.
Quick and easy to sew, the Ornella top is the perfect project for beginners looking to start their garment-sewing journey.
Ornella is an Italian feminine name derived from « ornello », meaning ash tree. It evokes strength, grace, and refinement.

Numerous main fabrics are compatible with the Ornella top, your choice depends on your preferences! If you want to put emphasis on the voluminous frill choose a lively fabric that can hold volume (eyelet embroidery, cotton, cotton & linen). Because the design has gathers, all the same avoid too thick fabrics. If you prefer a soft look, head towards a fluid fabric (silk, viscose).

How to style the Ornella top?
The Ornella bow top is an easy-to-wear piece that fits effortlessly into your everyday wardrobe. Pair it with jeans for a casual look that’s perfect for everyday wear, or style it with shorts (Edmond or Pénélope for example), for a light and breezy holiday outfit. Sewn in the same fabric as a pair of elasticated-waist mini shorts, it makes a chic loungewear set, perfect for relaxing at home or even as a pretty pyjama set.
A sewing machine is all you need, an overlock machine is optional. The bodice band, straps and bow are all lined. For neat, professional-looking seams on the inside of the garment, I recommend using French seams.
The illustrated sewing guide includes a whole section dedicated to making adjustments. I’ll show you how to alter the length of the top, adjust the straps, and even change their placement. Adjustment lines are clearly marked on the relevant pattern pieces to make these modifications as easy as possible.
While I was still in the early stages of developing the design and trying to decide on its name, one of you (whose name happens to be Ornella) ordered a packet pattern.
I wasn’t familiar with the name Ornella, and as I wrote it on the thank-you card, I fell in love with it. I thought it sounded so beautiful and melodic.
Ornella is an Italian feminine name derived from « ornello », meaning ash tree. It evokes strength, grace, and refinement.
For my version, I chose a white cotton broderie anglaise fabric with scalloped edges. I found it at a fabric shop in Paris, Tissus Reine. Unfortunately, this fabric isn’t available online.
Yes. It’s easy to turn the Ornella top into a dress. You can do this by using the length adjustment lines. During pattern testing, two testers made this hack. You can find the exact method they used in their respective posts.
The Ornella top sewing pattern is available in sizes 34 to 50.
Yes. When you purchase the Ornella top PDF sewing pattern, you receive two different types of pattern sheets.
First, you’ll receive pattern sheets for a single size. These feature two sets of lines: finished garment lines and cutting lines. The finished garment lines are on the inside and show the outline of the completed garment. The cutting lines are on the outside and include the seam allowances.
Secondly, you’ll receive pattern sheets showing all sizes on the same sheets. These only include the cutting lines, with seam allowances included.
When you purchase the printed Ornella top sewing pattern, you receive a large pattern sheet showing all sizes. This sheet only includes the cutting lines, with seam allowances included.
Yes. The PDF pattern sheets showing all sizes include layers, with one layer per size, so you can easily select the size or sizes you need.
The different sizes are also distinguished by color, with a different color for each size, on both the PDF pattern sheets and the printed pattern sheets.
Yes. The PDF sewing pattern is designed to be printed on A4 and US Letter paper. When printing, select « Actual Size » or « 100% » and « Auto Orientation » in your print settings to ensure the pattern is printed to the correct scale.
Yes, it’s absolutely possible to line the ruffle. To do so, I recommend treating the main fabric and the lining as a single layer of fabric from the gathering step onwards (except for the final hem).
