Pénélope: skirt and shorts with patch pockets

Pénélope: skirt and shorts with patch pockets

Price range: 14,00 € through 25,00 €

Pénélope is a duo of timeless sewing patterns designed for ambitious beginners. Avec leurs tailles hautes et leurs coupes flatteuses, cette jupe et ce short à poches plaquées deviendront les alliés de vos plus belles tenues d’automne. Easy to sew and comfortable to wear, these patterns are ideal for learning how to attach a waistband, make patch pockets, insert an invisible zipper, and assemble a lining (optional), all with minimal hand sewing.

Sew it in a heavy wool, a velvet, or a cotton twill: there are countless ways to make the Pénélope designs your own. Feel free to interpret them however you like, inspired by your current mood and creativity!

Why choose patch pockets?

The patch pockets add a touch of character to the Pénélope skirt and shorts. They give the garments a subtle 1960s feel, creating a silhouette that’s both elegant and relaxed. It’s these little details that make all the difference to a look.

And because patch pockets are also a great way to develop your sewing skills, this pattern teaches you how to create beautifully finished patch pockets using a technique that’s as simple as it is satisfying.

A wide range of fabrics will work beautifully for the Pénélope pattern, so your choice really depends on the look you’re after! Tweed will give it a Chanel-inspired feel, while tartan wool will evoke the charm of the English countryside. Corduroy will lend it a soft, autumnal look. Given the structured cut of this design, avoid lightweight, drapey fabrics. I recommend a maximum fabric weight of 500 g/m². For the lining, cotton or viscose are ideal choices.

How to style the Pénélope skirt and shorts?

The Pénélope skirt and shorts are easy-to-style pieces for everyday wear. Pair them with an oversized sweater tucked in, a pussy-bow blouse, or even the Giselle top. Add a pair of tights, some ankle boots, a Sophie Scarf, and a trench coat, and you’re all set! The high waist of the Pénélope skirt and shorts beautifully accentuates your silhouette, while their A-line cut offers all the comfort you need for a busy lifestyle.

FAQ

All you need is a sewing machine; an overlocker is optional. With the lined versions, all the raw edges are concealed inside. For the unlined versions, your sewing machine’s zigzag stitch will do the job perfectly.

The illustrated instruction booklet includes a whole section dedicated to fit adjustments. For example, I explain how to adjust the height of the hip line on the skirt and the rise of the shorts.

For my versions of the skirt and shorts, I chose checked wool and black wool. I found these fabrics at the Parisian fabric shops Tissus Market and Tiss’ Art. Unfortunately, these fabrics are not available online.

Pénélope est un prénom issu de la mythologie grecque que j’ai toujours adoré.

The wife of Odysseus, she is renowned for her intelligence, patience, and faithfulness. During the long years of her husband’s absence, Pénélope devises a now-legendary ruse: each day, she weaves a piece of cloth that she secretly unravels every night, thus delaying the need to choose a suitor.

But don’t worry! With the instructions provided in this pattern, you certainly won’t need to unpick at night everything you’ve sewn during the day!

Yes. It’s easy to lengthen the Pénélope skirt. You can do this using the length adjustment lines.

The Pénélope sewing pattern is available in sizes 34 to 50.

Yes. When you purchase the Pénélope shirt and shorts PDF sewing pattern, you receive two different types of pattern sheets.

First, you’ll receive pattern sheets for a single size. These feature two sets of lines: finished garment lines and cutting lines. The finished garment lines are on the inside and show the outline of the completed garment. The cutting lines are on the outside and include the seam allowances.

Secondly, you’ll receive pattern sheets showing all sizes on the same sheets. These only include the cutting lines, with seam allowances included.

When you purchase the printed Pénélope skirt and shorts sewing pattern, you receive a large pattern sheet showing all sizes. This sheet only includes the cutting lines, with seam allowances included.

Yes. The PDF pattern sheets showing all sizes include layers, with one layer per size, so you can easily select the size or sizes you need.

The different sizes are also distinguished by color, with a different color for each size, on both the PDF pattern sheets and the printed pattern sheets.

For this pattern, you can choose between two options: a fully lined skirt and shorts, or a partially lined skirt and shorts.

The fully lined versions have several advantages:

  • In autumn and winter, for a warmer garment.
  • To prevent scratchy fabric from coming into direct contact with your skin.
  • If you prefer a clean interior finish with no visible overlocked or zigzagged edges.

The partially lined versions have several advantages:

  • In spring and summer, for a lighter garment.
  • If you choose a main fabric that isn’t usually lined, such as denim.
  • If you’re a beginner at sewing.
